Some resources — metal ores, crude oil, coal — took millions of years to form and are being used far faster than they're replaced: they're finite. Others, like timber or cotton, can be regrown within a human lifetime if managed carefully: they're renewable. Recycling metals and plastics stretches finite resources further and uses far less energy than mining and refining from scratch.
